Teaching English and Languages in Tanzania
Children at primary schools in Tanzania are taught in Swahili but
are then taught in English at secondary and post secondary education.
As most children speak Swahili at home too it is incredibly important
that they learn English before they get to secondary school or they
will really struggle in their future education. Therefore, primary
schools in Tanzania are very keen to have good English speakers
help them teach English to their children.
Our teaching projects in Tanzania are based at two primary schools
in Arusha. Both schools struggle to recruit good English teachers.
This is where you can help. You can choose to work with the very
young children at the pre-school or nursery departments of the schools
or older children in the primary and junior departments.
Your main role will be to help with the teaching of English, most
notably spoken English. The schools also dedicate Friday afternoons
to sports if you are interested in helping coach football, swimming
or athletics they would be very grateful for your help.
The schools are open during term time between January and March,
May and July and September and November. Outside these dates the
schools will be closed but volunteers are still welcome to come
and help in local orphanages or teach in vacation classes.

The school terms are listed below. We recommend that you should
